Saskatchewan manufacturing sales strong through first half of 2014, on pace to hit $17 billion on the year
Saskatchewan manufacturing sales were up by more than 8.9 per cent during the first half of 2014, led by strong growth in non-durable goods (10.4 per cent), according to new data released today by Statistics Canada. While the industry remained relatively unchanged in June, posting a modest 0.2 per cent decline over May, it rose by more than 10 per cent compared to last year's June numbers, and is now on pace to close in on the $17 billion mark by the end of the year.

For the second straight month, Saskatchewan manufacturing sales climbed to a new record high in May, peaking at nearly $1.5 billion. But, according to the association representing manufacturers in the province, shifting pressures in both domestic and global markets, coupled with ongoing productivity and workforce challenges, are adding caution to an otherwise optimistic outlook for the remainder of the year.

April marked by record growth, 'cautious optimism' for Saskatchewan manufacturers
Saskatchewan manufacturing sales were up 8.4 per cent year-over-year in April — including 6.6 per cent from March — to more than $1.4 billion, according to the latest data released from Statistics Canada. Through the first four months of 2014, shipments have grown by 10.4 per cent year-over-year, driven by spikes in both durable and non-durable goods, which jumped seven and 12.2 per cent, respectively, over the same timeframe.

Saskatchewan manufacturing sales up 8.6 per cent in March, 9.8 per cent in Q1
Saskatchewan manufacturing sales were up 8.6 per cent year-over-year in the month of March, rounding out an impressive first quarter of 9.8 per cent growth, compared to the first three months of 2013. Non-durable goods, which account for two-thirds of all manufacturing production, drove the majority of the sector's Q1 gains — jumping 13.4 per cent year-over-year. Durable goods, meanwhile, showed much more modest growth at just over three per cent.

Saskatchewan manufacturing employment, sales both up to start 2014
Employment in Saskatchewan's manufacturing sector spiked 1.7 per cent during the month of April, to 29,300 workers — more than three per cent higher than the 12-month average of 28,400 set in 2013. Sales, meanwhile, have jumped off to a quick start in 2014 as well. Output in January was 11.6 per cent higher than one year ago, while February numbers received another notable bump of more than 12.7 per cent.

Foreign-trained workers support Saskatchewan manufacturing growth, job creation
Saskatchewan manufacturers prefer to hire Saskatchewanians first. Not only is it a shared social obligation, it simply makes good business sense — with reduced training times, mitigated financial risk, and more predictable long-term employment outcomes. Where that fails, Saskatchewan manufacturers prefer to hire staff from other regions of Canada. The reality, however, is that internationally-trained workers remain an essential element of the province's workforce strategy.

Saskatchewan manufacturing sales spike in November
Saskatchewan manufacturing sales topped $1.4 billion in November — a four per cent jump from October and a 19.6 per cent increase year-over-year, according to figures released today by Statistics Canada. Cumulative manufacturing sales in the first 11 months of 2013, meanwhile, spiked 7.6 per cent compared to the first 11 months of 2012.
